Adaptive Bamboo Structure:

Generative Design Exploration

Design Exploration | 2020

A project designing an adaptive building structure using bamboo, a sustainable construction material with unique characteristics. Generatively designed to enable replication at different footprint and topography to be able to accommodate various function.

The project was kickstarted with initial research and studies of bamboo’s material characteristic and joint systems. These designed were developed through physical model and digital testing, exploring forms and design possibilities. Grasshopper scripting such as Kangaroo for live physics testing, Ladybug for solar exposure analysis and Galapagos for design optimisation were implemented in the design. The design aims to minimise the material usage (smallest roof area possible) whilst providing the most optimal climatic protection for both structural components and the inhabitants.
