Sight of an Eagle:

Golden Eagle Observatory in Vajont Valley

Architectural Design Project | 2020

Vajont Dam
33080 Erto e Casso
Metropolitan City of Venice
Italy

The site is on the elevated southern part of the Vajont Dam, Erto e Casso, Northern Italy. The dam is part of the Friulane Dolomiti natural park which conserves the flora and fauna of the region including an abundant population of golden eagles. The Vajont Dam is currently functionally obsolete since a landslide on 9 October 1963 which devastated the surrounding town of Longarone, killing thousands by tsunami wave. The architecture aims to activate the site through the connection of humans and eagles and promote the natural park’s conservation objectives.

Sitting on top of the dam, the site has a predominant vertical characteristic with 360-degree unrestricted views towards Longarone and the Dolomites. Building on this observation exploration initially started with the anamorphic experience of the site, an urge to go up, to draw the human experience into the nature of the valley. The Sight of an Eagle engages with the spheres and apertures of vision between man and eagle as they dance between each other. Programmatically the building is an Eagle Observatory, engaging with views upwards, outwards and through 360-degree immersions, with a landscape of golden eagle nesting areas and observation cabins for overnight stay.
