The Landscape were altered to have extreme peaks and dips, the topology enables the landscape to serve as a seasonal artificial marshlands. These landscape fluctuations conceal and reveal views around the site.

Reinventing Dungeness’ Iconic Photograpy: The High Contrast Scene

Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) trained on Shingles Texture Database

The orientation of shingle placement on the main gallery’s roof are determined by the colour palette of the exhibited pieces. These patterns were generated by artificial inteligence fed with approximately 1000 shingle texture images matched with its colour.

Reinventing Dungeness

A Photography Gallery Complex Masterplan

Architecture Project | 2021

Dungeness Road,
Romney Marsh,
England,
TN29 9ND

A building project developed from explorations of light filtration systems; the design aspires to reinvent Dungeness’ iconic pictorial identity through a photography gallery complex masterplan. Situated within the boundaries of RH&DR track roundabout at the edge of Dungeness, a vast shingle beach in Southeast England. The masterplan is consisted of multiple photography galleries each housing distinct genres of photography, a workshop and multifunctional space, a restaurant and an in-house artist’s residence. The architecture will be built on a parametrically designed landscape, exaggerating the beach’s subtle fluctuating terrain, allowing it to choreograph the circulation of visitors by concealing and revealing significant views around the site. Parts of the landscape will be flooded during high tides due to parts of it being below the sea level, to become an ecological mesocosm, an artificial marshland extending the Dungeness National Park.

The materiality of each gallery is tailored to evoke spatial atmospheric qualities to respond to the exhibited pieces and framed views, with forms sensitive to its context. Viewpoints within each building was designed with miniscule pieces and details carefully positioned, framing the new photographic icons of Dungeness based on the mood and theme of each gallery. Simulating the click of a camera shutter when aligned.
